This is because, unlike Spanish, it is not common for English nouns to be spelled with a double \u201cr\u201d (although it is used in some verb tenses).<\/p>\n<p>The correct way to write the name of the most famous Spanish ham is \u201cSerrano ham\u201d with a double \u201cr\u201d rather than \u201cserano ham\u201d with only one \u201cr\u201d. But where does the word \u201cSerrano\u201d come from?[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #e82f37;\">Origin of the words sierra and serrano<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Etymologically, Serrano comes from the word \u201csierra\u201d, which comes from the Latin \u201cserra\u201d, which in the beginning did not refer to the Serrano ham itself but rather to a cutting tool with triangular spikes. Later, as it evolved into late Latin it was also used to describe the small triangular-shaped mountain chains, similar to the peaks of the cutting instrument, as the word appears in the \u201c<em>Cantar del M\u00edo Cid\u201d <\/em>composed at the end of the 12th century.<\/p>\n<p>From there, \u201cSerrano\u201d also transitioned from an adjective to a noun, initially associated with the shepherds who lived in the mountains south of Avila and Salamanca in the area now known as Batuercas and Sierra de Gredos. They were the \u201cSerranos\u201d who came down from the mountains with their herds, similar to the French &#8220;gavaches&#8221; who came down from the areas in the Pyrenees where the \u201cgaves\u201d or torrents were located.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #e82f37;\">Serrano, cold air and cured ham<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In Spanish, the word \u201cSerrano\u201d came to describe anything and everything related to mountains, especially the weather, the air and the cold, so important in the process of curing Spanish ham, which requires fresh air and cool temperatures. Indeed, Serrano ham is cured with the passage of time and exposure to fresh air.
